North Western Winds

Contemplating it all from the great Pacific Northwest

Square km

A co-worker today told me that Vancouver Island is three times larger than England. I said you’ve got to be kidding. Knowing me to be a bit of an internet propellerhead, she challenged me to “find out on the net.”

The Wikkipeida puts England at 130,395 square km (51,191 square miles). A B.C. tourism site puts Vancouver Island at 32,261 square km (19,356 square miles).

It seems like she had the ratio reversed.

Did she mean England excluding Wales and Scotland? More than that, I’m wondering is how widespread this idea is? She said it was very common but she’s much older than I am. No one I know has ever mentioned this comparison before. Then again maybe this is just one of those nutbar nationalist things.
