Obama: "... an obscure passage in Romans.”

Ouch -- Obama's playing to people's ignorance of the Bible.

Romans is one of Paul's most systematic letters. The "obscure passage" comes in the first chapter, right after the salutations. Everything that comes later is predicated on the very reason Paul brought up homosexuality -- demonstrating humanity's sinfulness and need of salvation. This is an obscure passage?

I was going to approach Obama with an open mind, but the willfulness of this spin will make me question anything he says.

none written by their putative authors, all drawing on second - or third - or fourth hand accounts

No. Really, do we have to denigrate the gospels in order to affirm the value and inspired nature of Paul's Epistles?

To be specific, people can and do dispute the authorship of all four gospels, but the traditional authors are strong and viable candidates. Also see Richard Bauckham's "Jesus & the Eyewitnesses"

Interesting post...I never thought of the chronology of Paul as that important to understanding the people of the New Testament era. Not being a Biblical fundamentalist, I think it is important to have a sense of history about this confusing book. Good post.

I'm not arguing religion, but Paul was right in the debate.

Mike Huckabee is the closest thing to a Christian politician in the American political presidential race. The rest are not born-again.

Lately I am becoming more and more frustrated by search, and turn to browse where possible. I'm not always satisfied to allow a computer algorithm to present what exists, because as Grafton points out, search misses things (and also turns up wholly irrelevant results). Drilling into hand-picked categories often provides a survey of available information that reveals unexpected links and sources. This approach may seem antiquated, but it's still enlightening.
